Game Summary/Box Score
April 29, 2006 Salt Lake Nemesis at Utah Wolverines @ Juan Diego High
School
SALT LAKE 32 UTAH WOLVERINES 31
SALT LAKE CITY – All the planets had to be in perfect
alignment as the Salt Lake Nemesis came back from a 19-0 deficit, getting big
plays from all-stars, Nate Cone and Harold Regin to edge by the Utah Wolverines 32-31 at Juan Diego
High School.
It looked all Wolverines
early… and often as the Wolverines scored on their first two possessions,
getting key plays from quarterback Steve Waelty, who
threw for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns while running for another; in rolling up
to the 19-0 lead early in the second quarter.
The Nemesis finally got on
the board late in the second quarter when Nate Cone,
who threw for 278 yards and 4 touchdowns against the vaunted Wolverine defense,
found Rich Garden for a 35-yard score.
As the half was winding down, Nemesis linebacker, Dan Cruser stepped in front of a Steve Waelty
pass and was on his way towards the Nemesis goal line. About to be brought
down, Cruser flipped to the fastest man on the
Nemesis team, Harold Regin, who scored 6 defensive
touchdowns in 2005, and he added one more to pull the Nemesis to within 19-12
at the half.
Both teams were missing
their regular place-kicker and it would turn out to be the difference. The Nemesis were
missing Jeremiah Bradshaw and the Wolverines were missing Josh Clark. Between
the two of them, they had only missed one extra point all season. There were 5
extra points missed in this one game.
Salt Lake scored early in
the 3rd quarter and the game was tied at 19. After exchanging touchdowns later in the
period, the two teams entered the 4th quarter all knotted up at
25-25… both teams missing extra points along the way.
The Wolverines scored late
in the 4th quarter when Tony Saunders knifed into the end zone to
cap a Wolverine drive… and again, the conversion was missed.
The Nemesis had the final
“planets align” late in the game. Getting
the big interception/lateral by Cruser and Regin was the first, having a 100-yard James Neslen kickoff return for touchdown called back was the
second, getting numerous extra points missed by the Wolverines was third,
actually getting to the Wolverine 1-yard line was 4th, Nate Cone’s quick clock-stopping spike with 1 second
remaining was 5th, and then Cone finding… yep, Harold Regin
in the corner of the end zone for the 6-yard score on the last play of the game
was 6th… and then Cone stepping up and nailing the extra point, his
first try of the game, was the final number in a complex combination.
A combination… that spelled victory for the Nemesis, in a game that never seemed to be theirs until the last play.
