GREAT FALLS – For the past two years, the
Glacier Knights have been the only team the Great Falls Gladiators have been able
to beat… well, old reliable turned up again on a rain-soaked soggy night in
Great Falls as the Gladiators, once again, upended the Knights 20-6 to tie the
Bitterroot Blaze for the early lead in the Northern Conference of the RMFL’s AA
Division.
Although there were no
interceptions thrown and only a few fumbles, there were plenty of mistakes made
as the yellow hankies flew in abundance, apparently oblivious to the miserable
conditions of the early spring evening.
The teams were whistled for 270 yards in penalties on a night when the
teams only combined for a total of 193 total net yards COMBINED, including a
Negative 11 total net yards for the Knights who were sacked a reasonable amount
of 3 times, however, the could not get a running back sprung out of the
backfield most of the evening as the Gladiator defense swarmed the Knights at
will.
Sterling Wynn had a big
night, accounting for more than ½ of the Gladiators total net offense with 109
net yards, including 105 rushing yards and a 12-yard touchdown run late in the
first half which put the Gladiators up comfortably at the break.
The Knights defense did play well, however, holding the Gladiators to only 204 total net yards, benefited greatly by sacking Gladiator quarterbacks 6 times for 71 yards in losses; Red Dutton accounting for two of those sacks. It was actually the Knight defense that prevented the shutout when Kevin Reed broke through and blocked a David Milodragovich field goal attempt of 47 yards; Beau Herman scooped up the loose ball and raced 63 yards for the Knights first touchdown of the season.
