UTAH HEAT 26 SALT LAKE 22 (OT)

OREM – The expansion AAA franchise, Utah Heat, picked up their first ever victory in one of the most exciting games of the young RMFL season Saturday by storming out to a quick 20-0 lead and then weathering a furious 4th quarter comeback by the Salt Lake Nemesis and escaping with a 26-22 overtime victory in Orem, Utah.

Behind a solid rushing attack, lead by Dannon Handcuff (17 rushes, 115 yards), who scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime, the Heat had the game under control for most of the first three quarters.  Wide Receiver/defensive back, Brian Simmons began to emerge as a legitimate league star in the process, contributing 7 receptions for 109 yards and a late second quarter touchdown to extend the lead to 20-0.  Simmons, also however, was on the receiving end of a Nate Cone interception, returning it 30 yards for a score that put the Heat ahead by a 12-0 margin.

If not for tossing a couple of interceptions, including the one Simmons took back the other way, Nemesis quarterback, Nate Cone, had a pretty good afternoon… especially in the 4th quarter.  After Ryan Lang sliced into the end zone on the first play of the 4th quarter to shave the Heat lead to 20-6, the Nemesis had a chance. It wasn’t until later in the 4th, however, before Cone could cap two late drives with touchdown tosses to a couple of Johnson’s (Jeff and Andy). Once again, however, after the final touchdown, cutting the lead to 20-18, the Nemesis needed another big 2-point conversion… and again, Harold Regin was the man.

After a scoreless first series in the RMFL’s “Kansas City” Overtime process, the Heat drove to the 4-yard line where Handcuff took it the rest of the way.  On the conversion try, a pass, the Nemesis’ Harold Regin stepped in front of the receiver and raced 98-yards for a conversion return score.  The Nemesis, however, were unable to punch in a touchdown on their possession for the win and the Heat escaped with the first win in franchise history.
