HAMILTON – The Great Falls Gladiators
finished the season a perfect 2-0 against the top-ranked and highly regarded
expansion franchise, Bitterroot Blaze Saturday, by simply taking advantage of
every opportunity their defense presented them with and then, letting their
defense hold on for the hard-fought 19-14 road victory in Hamilton, Montana.
The Gladiators offense
could only account for 93 total net yards and 4 first downs, including only 2
pass completions, however, Mike Rhode and the Gladiator defense did made up the
difference as the team came out with the victory. Rhode scored 8 of the Gladiators 19 points by
recording a safety on Robb Simms of the Blaze and returning a Blaze fumble
22-yards to paydirt… both of those scores as part of
a 16-point 2nd quarter Gladiator outburst that turned out to be the
difference in the game.
For the Blaze, running back, Justin Nixon was on another tear; ripping off another 172 yards on a workman-like 35 rushing attempts, including the two Blaze touchdowns. The first Nixon score, late in the first quarter, drew the Blaze to a 7-7 tie before the Gladiators’ opportunistic defense fueled Great Falls’ 16-point second quarter. Nixon would score again midway through the third period to draw the team to within 19-14, however, that was all the home team could push across against the second ranked defense of the AA division.
Bitterroots, Jamie Jones, lead the TOP-ranked defense of the AA division, Bitterroot with an amazing 14 tackles on the game, many for short gains or losses as the Blaze defense was strong again in the loss.
