MORGAN – Victimized by Marauder big
plays and turnovers, the Utah Wolverines needed a big 4th quarter
comeback to overcome a 19-0 third quarter lead by the expansion, up-start
Morgan Marauders, to eke out a 21-19 victory in Morgan Saturday night.
After an early drive into the Morgan red
zone, Wolverine quarterback Shay Stucki was picked off by Marauder linebacker Aaron
Preece who had stepped in front of the pass and had
clear sailing for a 92-yard touchdown to put the Marauders ahead
6-0. As the Wolverines continued to
self-destruct on offense, but play great defense, the Marauders got another big
play. Marauders quarterback Ben Wiscombe found James Morgan down the right sideline for an
electrifying 83-yard touchdown. Post-game photographs showed that Morgan
appeared to be forced out of bounds by Dustin McCammon
before returning to the field of play to catch the pass and racing past the
Wolverine secondary for a touchdown. The score gave the Marauders a 12-0 lead
going into the half.
After Jeff Trussell
picked up a Stucki fumble in the backfield and raced 80-yards for a score, all
seemed to be lost for the proud Wolverines.
Similar to the previous week, however, James Neslen ignited the Wolverine comeback. Neslen wove through
the Marauder players on the ensuing kick-off and got the Wolverines on the board
with an 85-yard kick-off return for a touchdown and the third quarter ended
with the Marauders ahead 19-7.
It would be the place-kicking of Wolverine
place-kicker, Scott Thomsen that was the difference as the Wolverines scored twice
more in the 4th. Joey Collins came in for the struggling Stucki and
hit James Neslen for a 10-yard touchdown pass and
then scrambled his way in for the go-ahead touchdown later in the 4th
quarter to seal the victory.
The Wolverine defense, which only gave up the
one controversial score, was solid throughout, holding the Marauders to 155 net
yards which including the big 83-yard touchdown play to Morgan. The big green defense was lead by Jeremy
Smith who had 7-1/2 tackles and a sack and Andrew Butler who recorded 3 tackles
in the game on Ben Wiscombe.
Tigger Edwards had a career game for the Wolverines out of
the backfield, rushing for 98 yards and catching 5 passes for 96 yards to help
propel the Wolverine offense.
The Marauder defense which applied the “bend
but not break (and score a couple of td’s ourselves)” philosophy, was lead by Colby
Ball (6 tackles, sack), Joe Wiscombe (5-1/2 tackles,
interception) and ironman, Ben Wiscombe
(5-1/2 tackles, sack) in keeping the Wolverine offense out of the end zone for
3 quarters. Aaron Preece had a second interception as
well to go along with his big opening touchdown return to give the Marauders
the early lead.
