BOISE 26  IDAHO 6

Idaho Matadors at Boise Roughriders, May 7, 2005

HORSESHOE BENDSheridan Hodson returned the games opening kick-off 85 yards for a touchdown and later returned a punt for a touchdown to lead the Boise Roughriders over the Idaho Matadors in a defensive struggle settled by specials teams plays, 26-6 in Horseshoe Bend Saturday night.

As neither team could must much offense, and what little offense they could muster ended usually in one of a record 16 turnovers on the game. That’s right, THIS IS NOT A MISPRINT. 16 TURNOVERS… INCLUDING 14 COMBINED INTERCEPTIONS.  Of those interceptions, Maurice Sapp of the Roughriders was able to return one 48-yards for the games clinching touchdown late in the 4th quarter.

The teams also combined for 9 sacks, 7 sacks were recorded on Matador passers as defensive standouts for the Roughriders were en masse for this game.  Sean Thompson lead the team with tackles with 5 and he had a pick. Afa Faraimo had 4-1/2 tackles and 2 interceptions, Bob Mares had 4-1/2 tackles and a sack and Sapp had 4-1/2 tackles, a sack, an interception and the final clinching touchdown.

The Roughriders welcomed tailback, Aaron Blakely back to the team after being injured in the Rhino-Raider game. Blakely responded with 80 yards rushing on 20 carries and the only offensive touchdown for the Roughriders, a 6-yard run midway through the 4th quarter that turned a 13-6 lead into a 19-6 lead.

Jerry Smith was the lone offensive star for the Matadors, catching 8 passes for 128 yards and a the Matadors lone touchdown, a 45 yard pass from Tom Bennett that pulled the Matadors to within 7-6. A score that would stand until late in the 3rd quarter when Hodson would score his second touchdown on a punt return.  Bennett did pass for 168 yards on evening with 15 completions, however, it was the 5 passes he completed to the Roughriders that were irrecoverable for the Matadors.

The Matadors defense was tough in holding the Roughriders offense was down, but the one true star of mention for the team had to be Yharmaan Williams. Williams set a new RMFL mark with 4 interceptions on the game, breaking a log jam of players who had all had 3 interceptions in a game. But with the Matador offense either bogged down or turning the ball over, the effort was unrewarded with a victory.
