Vipers at Kamas Valley Muddogs, May 14, 2005

KAMASThe Kamas Valley Muddogs continued their surprising resurgence behind some solid defense and some big special teams plays to defeat the RMFL’s biggest enigma, the Vipers 18-13 Saturday afternoon in Kamas, Utah.

The first play of the game was entirely indicative of how things were going to go for the Vipers.  Nash Montoya received the opening kick-off of the game and as he reversed his field to elude oncoming Kamas Valley tacklers, reversed field back into the end zone was brought down by the Kamas Valley special teams for a safety.

All would seem right for the Vipers, however, when league-leading running back, Kyle Curtis reeled of a 25-yard touchdown run to put the Vipers in front 7-0. A lead that didn’t seem even too much at risk when the Muddogs recorded their second safety of the quarter when a shotgun snap sailed beyond Terry Smothers reach and out of the Viper end zone.

Byrce Kennington kicked the first of two field goals to extend the Viper lead to 10-4 in the second quarter. Kennington would go on to nail the longest field goal in RMFL history in the 3rd quarter, a 54-yard field goal that turned out to be the final score of the game.

Between Kennington’s field goals, the Muddogs would score off of a John Katoa recovery of a Viper fumble in the end zone. That score would give the Muddogs a tentative 11-10 halftime lead.  Chad Peterson would haul in a 10-yard Dustin Long pass after a short drive after a Viper interception. From that point, the Muddog defense took over to preserve the victory.

Pala Viatuu (5-1/2 tackles), Kyto Khouang (5 tackles), and Will Faleola (4-1/2 tackles) paced the Muddog defense in keeping the Viper offense out of the end zone.

Robert Gill, Nick Coates and Matt Peterson paced the Viper defense in a solid effort. Troy Peterson, one of the leagues sack leaders in 2004 got his first sack of the season in the Vipers 6th game.
