Rhino-Raiders at Idaho Falls Mustangs, May 14, 2005

IDAHO FALLS – So “the streak” continues.

The Rhino-Raiders continued their Rocky Mountain dominance with their 62nd consecutive wins in spring regular season and post-season play with a convincing 23-7 victory over the previously undefeated and confident Idaho Falls Mustangs Saturday night in Idaho Falls.

Uncharacteristically, the Rhino-Raiders relied on a dominant rushing attack against the Mustangs front seven, reeling off 178 rushing yards in 34 carries.  The Rhino-Raiders, typically a passing dominant team, only attempted 24 passes as their running game behind Justin Oswald and Rashad Kennedy created real problems for the Mustangs defense.  Oswald rushed 15 times for 104 yards and Kennedy rushed 12 times for 58 yards and the game-clinching touchdown as the Rhinos held off the Mustangs for the big road victory.

The Rhino-Raiders passing attack was also effective as Dave Stireman passed for 228 yards and two touchdowns, including the games first score with 4:08 remaining in the first quarter to his favorite receiver, Norvel Young, a 36-yard strike to put the Rhino-Raiders up 7-0 as the first quarter closed.

The Mustangs would strike back with 11:11 remaining in the second when Donavan Ard found Sean Powell wide open across the middle of the field for an 18-yard touchdown.  The Mustangs star tailback, Travis Boden was held down some, but did rush for 67 yards on 16 tough carries.

The Rhinos stifling defense was lead by the efforts of Levine Tupe (7 tackles), Bill Nebeker (5 tackles, ˝ sack) and Manu Taeoalii (4-1/2 tackles).  The Rhino-Raider defense also forced 6 Mustang turnovers in the game, including 3 fumbles and 3 interceptions, 2 by Trevor Bell who also contributed 3 big catches for 88 yards on offense to lead all receivers.

The Mustang defense was lead by Bryce Smith (7 tackles), Brandon Reed (6 tackles) and Scott Brown (5 tackles) in holding down a potent Rhino-Raiders offense.
