Utah Blitz at Salt Lake Nemesis, May 14, 2005

OREM – The Utah Blitz used defense and special teams to turn a 7-7 halftime tie into a 33-14 rout of division rival, Salt Lake Nemesis Saturday afternoon in Orem, Utah.

After Marvel Smith caught a late second quarter touchdown pass from Mark Henderson to pull the Nemesis even in the tightly contested game at halftime, the Blitz defense and special teams made the difference. Early in the third quarter, Nathan Mackey blocked a Nemesis punt and Sione Tua Tonga picked up the ball and scooted the final two yards in the end zone to give the Blitz the 14-7 edge.

A little later in the quarter, Mackey was in the right place at the right time again and scooped up a Mark Henderson fumble and raced 11 yards for the Blitz’ second defensive score of the quarter, giving them a more comfortable 20-7 lead.  When Hugo Anderson caught one of 3 Jeff Labounty completions for a 21-yard score, the Blitz held a more commanding 26-7 lead. The Nemesis would score quickly after on a Jerome Anderson touchdown score from Nate Cone, however, when Levi Vagana returned the ensuing kickoff  90-yards for another Blitz touchdown, the wind had been effectively taken out of the Nemesis comeback sails.

The Blitz rushing game was hitting on all cylinders once again, Vagana leading the way with 82 yards on 16 carries for a Blitz attack that racked up 210 as a team against only 36 yards passing as the Blitz offensive line once again preventing any sacks on quarterback Labounty.

Nate Cone had an all-star level game for the Nemesis as a quadruple threat. Cone rushed for 49 (to lead the team),  threw a touchdown pass and recorded 3 tackles on defense.

Mike Tooa and Zane Church lead the imposing Blitz defense. Tooa recorded 5-1/2 tackles and a sack and Church picked up 5 more as the Blitz once again put enormous pressure on the opposing offense and picked up another handful of sacks.
