IDAHO FALLS – The South RMFL
All-Stars’ defense was the story as the Northern All-Stars were held to no
first downs and negative net total yards in the first half as the South cruised
to a 23-0 halftime advantage and held on for a commanding 43-13 victory over
the North Stars in the 8th Annual RMFL All-Star Classic.
Rhino-Raiders’ star defensive end and
linebacker, Justin Oswald was named the game’s MVP after getting in on a safety
of North quarterback, Shane Jurasek, blocking a Bryan Hilborn field goal that
was picked up by Roger Shulze and returned for a
touchdown and recorded 4-1/2 tackles and 1-1/2 sacks to lead the South defense
which dominated the game.
The initial defensive scores set the tone for
the south which held league rushing champion, Travis Boden to only 1 net yard
on 5 carries in the game. The South
defense also picked up the 3rd score of the game when Kamas Valley’s
Kyto Khouang intercepted a Buckie Brawley pass in the second quarter and returned it
30-yards to paydirt to extend the South lead to 16-0.
After the Vipers’ Kyle Curtis added a later
second quarter touchdown, the South’s 23-0 halftime lead seemed pretty secure.
Curtis would end up with 54 yards on only 7
carries, including 2 touchdowns. Curtis’
offensive performance was trumped only by the Southern Division’s Offensive
MVP, Marcus Whalen who rushed for 77 yards on only 13 carries, including 2
touchdowns. Overally,
the South offense would rush for 190 yards on 35 carries in dominating fashion.
Little good could be done by the North
offense, especially in the first half.
The offense would generate one good drive in the 4th quarter
which was capped by a 6-yard sprint to the corner of the end zone by Boise’s
Aaron Blakely. That score would cut the
margin to 29-13 and seemed to give the North some hope. However, a couple of later scores by Marcus
Whalen and Curtis sealed the deal for the south.
A number of big plays in the game, including
the safety which was caused primarily by a mis-snapped
football back to Jurasek, the Oswald kick block and Shulze
score, the Khouang interception, and the biggest play
in a losing cause, a 94-yard fumble return of a mis-exchanged
football as the South were inside the North 5-yard line, by Irven
Hill of the Madison Lionz, the North’s first score of the game.
Overall, it was 6 turnovers and 4 sacks given
up by the North that did them in. The
South defensive front just overmatched the North and that turned out to be the
biggest difference in the contest.
