KAMAS – The high octane Rhino-Raiders
raced out to a quick 14-0 lead over the Kamas Valley Muddogs and then were
offensively stymied for more than 3 quarters, however, held on for a 14-0
victory Saturday night.
The Rhino-Raiders, who remain only one of
three of the league’s 21 teams that continue to be unbeaten at the week #3
mark, held a slight edge on net total yards, out-gaining the Muddogs 275 to
268. Rhino-Raider quarterback, Dave
Stireman accounted for the bulk of the Rhino-Raider offense, passing for 220
yards on 16 completions, including the two scores; two touchdown passes to his
favorite receiver, Norvell Young (6 receptions, 80
yards). The Rhinos also had a big game
from long-time star, Trevor Bell, who caught 6 passes for 91 yards.
The Muddogs, who with the loss fall to 1-3 on
the season, become the first team to hold the Rhino-Raiders to as little as 14
points in years. The Muddogs were the beneficiaries of two muffed punts, a lost
fumble and 3 interceptions of Stireman by Kyto Khouangrasvongsay. Kyto, who
had been filling in at quarterback for the Muddogs benefited by going primarily
defense for the Muddogs to become a thorn in the side of the big red, rhino
offense. Muddog
quarterback, Dustin Long, stepped in admirably for the Muddog
offense against the league’s #1 rated defense, passing for 156 yards on 12
completions on 23 attempts and only 1 interception. George Allums
also had another fine day at tailback, rushing for 96 yards on 13 carries to
assist in the Muddog ball-control offense.
Although the Rhino-Raider defense could not re-produce the 23 net yard effort they pitched against the Boise Roughriders the previous week, they once again kept another team from scoring, even when the offense wasn’t completely on. Eric Eyre was “all over the field” for the Rhinos with 7-1/2 tackles and Justin Oswald recorded 2 sacks on Long to help pace the Rhino-Raider defensive attack.
