MADISON 16  WASATCH 13

Wasatch Wildcats at Madison Lionz, April 23, 2005

SUGAR CITYThe Madison Lionz weathered heavy early rains and a furious 4th quarter comeback attempt by the Wasatch Lionz to hang on for a nail-biting 16-13 victory.

The Lionz had edged out to a 13-0 lead on the first play of the second half when Madison quarterback, Troy Dougherty (18-32-1-261-2) found Todd Barber (5 receptions, 100 yards, touchdown)  in the left flats for a short completion. Barber broke a couple of tackles and out-raced the Wildcat secondary into the end zone for a 73-yard pass play that gave the Lionz the 13-0 advantage.

The Wildcats, who defeated the Colorado Scorpions in week #1 75-0, did not score until the first play of the 4th quarter when Wildcat quarterback, Adam Cunningham (13-33-2-208-2) found Tony Saunders for a 5-yard touchdown pass. Saunders lead the Wildcats in total yards with 8 receptions for 86 yards and 6 rushes for 38 yards to lead the Wildcats in both categories.

The score would remain 13-6 through most of the 4th quarter. With just under 5 minutes in the 4th quarter, things began to get even more interesting.  After sacks and penalties set the Lionz back near their own 10-yard line with a 3rd down and 43, the Wildcats’ own penalties move the Lionz out near the 25 yard-line for a punt attempt by Madison punter and star receiver, Buck Mouser.  With a hard-charging Wildcat punt rush on, Mouser sprinted outside the rush and up the right sideline, getting just out of bounds for a 29-yard run and an amazing first down for the Lionz.   The Lionz would drive into position for Mouser to kick what seemed like a game-clinching 31-yard field goal with 3:15 to go in the game.

Cunningham, who had struggled through most of the first 3 quarters then got hot.  He quickly moved the Wildcats into position for anther short touchdown, this time, to Mike Wissler with 1:37 remaining on the clock to pull the Wildcats to within 16-13 with two time outs remaining.

The Lionz recovered the Wildcat on-sides kick and burned the clock down to 34.1 seconds remaining before having to punt.  Mouser then received the punt and raced around in the backfield in an attempt to run the clock down.  He raced left, then right, then completed a pass to Tony Jenks over the middle. Jenks moved it upfield for an 8-yard gain before being hauled down. The Madison clock operator, however, failed to start the clock on the marathon play.  The officials allowed 27 seconds on the clock as the Wildcats took possession turnover on downs.

Again, Cunningham was effective, this time hitting wide receiver Jay Fletcher for a 35-yard completion down to the Madison 20-yard line in position for a Gary Nye field goal attempt to tie the game.  The Wildcats were flagged for holding on the next play and were pushed back to the 30-yard line with about 16 seconds remaining.  Two incomplete passes later and there were 5.5 seconds left as Nye headed out to attempt  a game-tying 48-yard field goal.  The Wildcats however, trotted out 12 players and were flagged another 5 yards.  With the field goal attempt  now more than 50-yards, the Wildcats elected for the deep end zone pass which fell incomplete as the game ended.
