Vipers at Utah
The much improved Vipers rode a strong
rushing performance by tailback, Kyle Curtis (11 carries, 66 yards) and a solid
passing performance from Skyler Sherwood who tossed 2 touchdown passes for the
Vipers. Sherwood, who started in the
2004 RMFL All-Star Classic for the Utah Conference all-stars
came to the Vipers when his 2004 team, the Layton Pitbulls folded in the
off-season. The Viper offense, however,
not explosive against the top ranked Wolverine defense, did just enough damage
to score the win. Vipers
long-time star, Colby Cook caught 4 passes and one touchdown and Walter
Williams caught 4 passes and the other touchdown to account for much of the
Viper offense.
The Wolverines, who have had high hopes of an
RMFL championship in 2005 were humbled by not only the
Vipers, but their own big mistakes. 12
penalties for 115 yards were whistled on the Wolverines and the Wolverines
turned the ball over to the Vipers 5 times (2 interceptions, 3 fumbles). These mistakes were just too much to overcome
against an opportunistic Viper squad.
The great Viper defensive effort was lead by
Chris Norton (8 tackles), Mike Christensen (5 tackles, fumble recovery), Nick
Coates (5 tackles, blocked kick), and Matt Peterson (5 tackles) who had two big
interceptions in the game. The Vipers
not only held the Wolverine offense scoreless, but the Wolverines were limited
to just over 200 yards of total offense.
The Wolverine defense played solid, except for key penalties that kept Viper drives alive. The Vipers offense was held to a meager 147 total net yards with Wolverine stars, Roger Shulze (10-1/2 tackles, 1 sack) and Matt Shoda (6 tackles, ½ sack) leading the way.
