WASATCH 75 COLORADO 0

Colorado Scorpions at Wasatch Wildcats, April 16, 2005

NOTE: At press time, the Colorado Scorpions had yet to submit statistics/game report for this contest.

OREMThe Wasatch Wildcats’ defense and special teams out-scored the Wasatch Wildcats offense by a slim 40-35 margin.  Unfortunately for the Colorado Scorpions, the Wildcats offense and defense were on the same team as the Wildcats used solid offensive and explosive defensive play to rout the Scorpions 75-0 on the opening weekend of regular season RMFL play.

Jared Harward returned two interceptions for touchdowns, Matt Stroshine returned a fumble and a punt for a touchdown and Tony Saunders caught 2 touchdown passes and were just a few of the many stars that shone for the Wasatch Wildcats on Saturday.  Quarterback, Adam Cunningham threw for 158 yards and 3 touchdowns and ran in for a fourth, before exiting the game early in the third quarter. The Wildcat rushing attack accounted for a big 205 yards split between a number of runners, including George Uyema (64 yards), Sim Tiatia (38 yards) and Tyler Phillips (33 yards) as the team leaders.

But the real story for the Wildcats was BIG plays.

Samasoni Steele started it all out early by intercepting Zane Newitt on the second play from scrimmage and racing 16-yards into the end zone to put the Wildcats on the board. Later in the quarter, Jared Harward had the first of his 3 interceptions in the game, returning it 33-yards for the Wildcats second score.  As the Wildcat offense started slow, the defense also picked up the teams third score, a 10-yard fumble return for touchdown by Garth Johnson.  Fittingly, the final score of the game, was an electrifying 81-yard punt return for touchdown by Matt Stroshine who had already scored on a fumble return in the third quarter.

Another defensive star was Kengike Vainuku who lead the team in tackles with 7-1/2 and was a force all over the field until he exited the game in the third quarter.

Overall, a sound victory for the Wildcats who return to the Rocky Mountain Football League after a 4 season absence.
