Snake River Sabercats
quarterback, Matt Saylors, was apparently held out of
the end zone on a quarterback sneak play as time expired to give the Brigham
City Devil Dogs a 26-19 victory in not only the opening game of the season for
these two franchises, but the first game ever.
Perhaps a sign of things to come for these exciting
teams.
The Devil Dogs then made another mistake and
kicked the ball to perhaps the most exciting new player in the league, Tyler
Collingwood of the Sabercats. Collingwood had already caught a touchdown
pass, rushed for a touchdown and passed for a touchdown on a halfback option
play. Collingwood took the kickoff and raced 40 yards into Devil Dog territory.
After Collingwood caught a 15-yard pass and was roughed on end of the play, the
Sabercats were a Bill Dees catch from having first
and goal at the one-foot line, however with less than a second remaining.
The official indication on the Saylors quarterback sneak was that he was stopped short and
the whistle was blown before his second effort carried him over the goal line.
Had the Sabercats been credited with the touchdown,
they would have still had to convert an extra point, of which they had only
made one of three in the game, to tie the score and force overtime.
The Devil Dogs’ run offense was lead by a plethora
or runners, including quarterbacks. Tailback,
Randy Bushnell, however, lead the team, rushing for 84 yards on 12 carries. The
two Devil Dog quarterbacks, combined for 126 passing yards and 83 rushing yards
to also spark the offense. On the receiving side, Nathan Taylor caught 3 passes
for 102 yards and a big 72-yard touchdown grab from Cade
Mund to push the early Devil Dog lead to 13-0.
Besides Collingwood, who combined for more
than 200 total yards on the game (72 rushing, 41 receiving, 66 passing, 40
return yards), the Sabercats had Shawn King who
caught 3 passes for 87 yards including the big halfback option pass from
Collingwood that brought them to within 20-19 in the third quarter. The Sabercat defensive effort was lead by Tim Smith (9-1/2
tackles) and Roger Gonzalez (5-1/2 tackles) in a losing effort. Although the Sabercat defense was torched on the ground for 277 rushing
yards, forcing 5 turnovers (2 interceptions, 3 fumbles) helped keep them in the
game throughout.
The Devil Dog defense was lead by Luke Eyre
(5 tackles), Dave Curtis (4 tackles) and Corey Hebb
(4 tackles, sack) as they were able to shut down every facet of the Sabercat offense, except Collingwood.
