Boise Roughriders at Pocatello Predators, April 16, 2005

RMFL – In a game that would have been the rivalry game of the week, between two teams that had faced each other 6 times since 2001, the Boise Roughriders rode the momentum of a late second quarter touchdown to break a 0-0 tie and overwhelmed the under-manned Pocatello Predators en route to a 31-6 victory in opening game action of RMFL play.

Kevin Bekker caught a short Brian Stogsdill (16-28-1-249-3) pass with 4 seconds remaining in the first half which gave the Roughriders a 7-0 halftime edge.  However, on the first play from scrimmage of the second half, Pocatello’s Jeff Belnap (11-32-2-163-1) found Scott Marshall for an electrifying 59-yard catch and run play to pull the Predators to within 7-6.  The fireworks didn’t stop there, however, on the Roughriders first play from scrimmage after the ensuing kick-off, Stogsdill found his star tight end, Shawn Mares up the left sideline for an even more astounding 80-yard catch and run to glory. Boise 14 Pocatello 6.  Later in the quarter, the Roughriders would remove all doubt, when linebacker, Afa Faraimo intercepted a Jeff Belnap pass and returned it 57-yards to paydirt to give the Roughriders a 21-6 lead.

Aaron Blakely, who rushed for 98 yards on 22 carries was another offensive star for the Roughriders. Blakely also picked up the Roughriders 4th touchdown, an 11-yard touchdown catch early in the 4th quarter.  Roughriders wide receiver, Tony McPherson also had a big day for the Roughriders, catching 8 passes for 114 yards.

The Predator offense struggled with inadequate line play throughout.  Running backs, Reggie Jackson and Richard Freeman were held to 19 total rushing yards and quarterback, Jeff Belnap suffered 3 sacks and numerous hurries as he attempted to execute his offense that had been dominant for 4 seasons previous.  Star receivers, Brock Gunter (4 receptions, 49 yards) and Travis Goodwin (5 receptions, 54 yards) turned in solid performances, but not enough to get Pocatello into the end zone enough to win.

The Roughrider defense was lead, as usual, by reigning RMFL Defensive MVP, Zac Jockumsen (6 tackles, ˝ sack), Afa Faraimo (4 tackles, ˝, sack, interception return for touchdown) and Terance King (3-1/2 tackles, ˝ sack).  The Predator defense which had pitched a shutout for most of the first half, including a goal line stand which had the Roughriders at 2nd and goal from the  2 yard-line and a later interception in the end zone to kill another Roughrider drive, was lead by Troy Sutton (7 tackles, interception), Jonny Fisher (7 tackles), and Cliff Garbett (5-1/2 tackles).
