RHINO-RAIDERS 42  BOISE 14

Rhino-Raiders at Boise Roughriders, April 23, 2005

HORSESHOE BENDThe defending champion Rhino-Raiders opened up their 2005 RMFL regular season with a dominating performance against the highly ranked and improved team from western Idaho, the Boise Roughriders. The much anticipated first match-up ever between the Roughriders and Rhino-Raiders was a close game for a while, but the dominating Rhino-Raider defense, that held the Roughrider offense to a paltry 23 net total yards of offense had the final say as the Rhino-Raiders rolled to a 42-14 victory.

It was the Roughrider defense, however, that drew first blood, as Dane Knickrehm picked off a Dave Stireman pass and sprinted 31-yards into the end zone to excite the home crowd and put the Roughriders ahead 7-0.  It wasn’t long after that, however, that Stireman got his revenge by capping a Rhino-Raider drive with an 11-yard scramble for a touchdown to draw the game even at 7-7.

The Rhino-Raiders had a completely balanced attack offensively getting 122 rushing yards and 184 passing yards. Stireman had a solid performance, completing 13 of 21 passes for 184 yards, two touchdowns and only the one interception as the heralded Rhino-Raider offensive line protected against any Roughrider sacks. All-star, Norvel Young lead all receivers with 4 receptions for 88 yards and a third quarter touchdown that put the Rhino-Raiders ahead 35-7 at the time.

Contrarily to the Stireman, Roughrider quarterbacks, Brian Stogsdill and Jake Holcomb were under constant pressure. Both Stogsdill and Holcomb were sacked 4 times during the game for 8 total for the Rhino-Raider defense.  Defensive ends Bill Nebeker and Shane Dooley lead the “sack attack” with 2 a piece.  The Rhino-Raider defense also forced 5 turnovers, 4 interceptions, including 1 each by Levine and Jay Tupe.  It was an interception by linebacker, Mike Pierce, however, who lead the team in tackles with 6, that turned the game for good.

Pierce picked off Holcomb in the third quarter and raced 32-yards into the end zone to put the Rhino-Raiders ahead by a 28-7 score and the rout was on.

The Roughriders’ only scores were both defensively as there were little or no offensive highlights. After Knickrehms first quarter touchdown that got the home team excited, the Roughriders only score would be another defensive touchdown, a 56-yard interception return of a Ryan Scadden pass in the fourth quarter to get the Roughriders to 42-14.

The side story of reigning RMFL defensive MVP, Zac Jockumsen against the league’s #1 defense in 2004 was cut short, as Jockumsen left the game in the first quarter not to return and recorded no tackles on the day. In his absence, Darnell Hasson, Sean Thompson and Dane Knickrehm (6 tackles each) and Afa Faraimo and Rashard Howard (4-1/2 tackles each) stepped up in a losing effort.
