KUNA – The 3-time RMFL champion Idaho
Falls Mustangs had all they could handle with the expansion, Idaho Matadors.
The Matadors out-gained the Mustangs 311 yards to 303 and lead from midway
through the third quarter into the 4th. The Mustangs, however, were resilient on the road and came back
for a 26-16 victory in the opening week of the RMFL regular season for both
teams.
The Mustangs had solid effort from newly
acquired tailback, Travis Boden. Boden cam over from the Pocatello Predators
and rushed for 51 yards on 10 carries, 2 touchdowns and a 2-point conversion to
lead the Mustang offense. Also, newly
acquired, Mustangs’ first-year quarterback, Donavan Ard passed for 161 yards
and rushed for 38 more. Ard found
another new Mustang starter, wide receiver, Brandon Reed for a big 75-yard
touchdown pass with just less than 12 minutes remaining in the game to put the
Mustangs ahead 20-16 to stay. Reed
caught 5 passes for 146 yards and had the biggest offensive output on the day.
The Matadors impressed many in a solid effort
that included 242 yards passing and 2 touchdowns from quarterback, Tom Bennett
and more than 100 total yards from scrimmage from tailback Billy Wingfield (33
rushing, 79 receiving). Chris Brown,
the Matadors wide receiver/place-kicker scored on a 7-yard touchdown pass and
kicked a 20-yard field goal as the first half came to a close to pull the
Matadors to within 14-10 at the half.
The Mustangs’ defense came to life at all of
the right times, forcing two big Tom Bennett interceptions and recording two
key sacks in holding down the Matador offense.
Sean Powell, an offensive star for 8 seasons for the Mustangs, recorded
a career best 9 tackles to lead the Mustang defense. Scott Brown (6 tackles, interception), Bryce Smith (4 tackles)
and Brad Foster (4 tackles) also had solid defensive performances for the
Mustangs.
The Matadors played a solid team effort in handing with the Mustangs throughout. Defensively, top performances were turned in by Derrick Trask (4-1/2 tackles), Robert Jackio (4 tackles) and Dan Buhler. Overall, however, the Matadors couldn’t stop the Mustangs ground attack which rolled in for the three key scores that were the difference in the game.
