Idaho Matadors at Vipers, April 23, 2005

MORGANThe Vipers are on a roll.

The Vipers have followed up an opening home loss to the Magic Valley Bulldawgs with consecutive impressive victories over the top-ranked Utah Wolverines and now over the up-and-coming expansion team, the Idaho Matadors.  The Viper defense dominated the Matadors, getting 5 turnovers, 5 sacks, a safety and a defensive score en rout to another convincing 22-0 victory.

Viper place-kicker, Bryce Kennington, also had a solid day, hitting two field goals of 27 and 42 yards including the first score of the game that put the Vipers up 3-0 early in the second quarter.  Viper star quarterback, Skyler Sherwood (15-21-1-191-1) later found Viper leading receiver, Colby Cook for a touchdown to put the Vipers up 10-0 as the first half was winding down.

Nick Coats blocked a punt out of the end zone and Mike Christensen returned and interception for a touchdown as the Viper defense had their way with the Matador offense.

Not to be overshadowed, Viper tailback, Kyle Curtis had a phenomenal day rushing for 139 yards on only 15 carries in propelling the Viper offense. Colby Cook ended up with 99 yards on 8 receptions on the day to go with his touchdown.

The Matadors did get an impressive game from their star wide receiver, Jerry Smith.  Smith caught 6 passes for 138 yards and considering that the Matador offense only ended up with 120 total net yards on the day was the Matador offense.

The Viper defense was headlined by Nick Coats, a former Layton Pitbull, who came over after the Pitbulls folded in the off-season. Coats not only blocked the punt for the safety, but lead the team in tackles with 6, including 2 quarterback sacks.

The Matador defense was stout in their own right, only yielding one offensive touchdown to the Vipers.  Justin Howell lead the Matador defense with 6 tackles and Brad Chase chipped in with 2 sacks on Sherwood.
