MADISON 24  MAGIC VALLEY 6

Madison Lionz at Magic Valley Bulldawgs, April 16, 2005

RUPERTThe Madison Lionz controlled the ball and rushed for 163 yards, but it was 3 Troy Dougherty touchdown passes that did the final damage as the Lionz rolled to a 24-6 victory over the Magic Valley Bulldawgs.

The Bulldawgs, who defeated the Vipers of Northern Utah away last week 24-15, were stunned by an active and vastly improved Lionz defense which held the Bulldawgs to 262 yards of total net offense, but more importantly, scoreless for more than 3 quarters in the game.

The Lionz backfield of Kenny Clark (14 rushes, 74 yards) and Shawn Robson (11 carries, 51 yards) helped the Lionz offense control the ball. However, when the Lionz had scoring opportunities, it was former league MVP quarterback, Dougherty that got the ball in the end zone.  Dougherty (21-32-0-157-3) found Todd Barber, Buck Mouser and newly acquired tight end and budding star, Nate Brown for short touchdown passes in the game.  Mouser, the reigning offensive MVP of the RMFL, who also doubles as the team’s place-kicker, also connected on a 38-yard field goal which was the only scoring in an otherwise scoreless first half.

The Bulldawgs got a boost from the return of star receiver, Cole Meiners who caught 7 Mike Manning passes for 175 yards, including a 75-yard reception midway through the 4th quarter that finally got the Bulldawgs on the score board.  Manning, himself, had a solid performance, passing for 215 yards, the touchdown and only one interception, although he was under constant pressure from a hard-charging Madison pass rush.

The Lionz defense was lead by Irvin Hill (5-1/2 tackles, 2 sacks) and Dustin Simmons (6 tackles) who lead a stifling team effort to shut down a potent Bulldawg attack.  The Bulldawgs defense was almost equal to the task, holding down an explosive Lionz offense. Cole Meiners (8 tackles), Lijah Calderwood (7 tackles), and brothers Rick  and Jeff May (7 tackles each) headlined the defense.
