RMFL – It seems like every season,
somehow, somewhere, the Magic Valley Bulldawgs find a
new great receiver to play with quarterback Mike Manning in their “5-gun”
offense. In 2005 it looks like that will
be Kelly Nebeker.
Nebeker caught 7 passes for 187 yards and 3 touchdowns
Saturday to lead the Magic Valley Bulldawgs over the
Vipers (northern
Bulldawg quarterback, Mike Manning, also played exceptionally well,
completing 16 of 29 passed for 307 yards and 4 touchdown passes. Manning, who holds the RMFL single game
passing record (420 yards) also got a boost from the return of former Bulldawg RMFL MVP (2001), Lonnie Edwards. Edwards compiled 98 total yards from
scrimmage (75 receiving, 23 rushing) in support of the Bulldawg
offense.
The Vipers struck first in the first
quarter. Following a long-sustained
drive, Viper quarterback, Terry Smothers (12-22-2-165-1) found Vipers star
receiver, Colby Cook in the end zone to put the Vipers up 7-0 and things looked
good for the big red Viper machine.
Manning, however, had an answer and marched the Bulldawgs
down the field early in the second quarter, capped by a Jeremy Shafer run for a
touchdown. After the next Viper drive
stalled, the Bulldawgs controlled more than 10
minutes of clock on a 79-yard drive that culminated with an 8-yard Manning to Nebeker pass in the corner of the end zone on 4th
and goal from the Viper 8-yard line.
The Vipers would draw to within 18-15 early
in the 4th quarter, however, when Smothers moved the ball down the
field, with a big pick up on a pass to Brannon Stacy setting the Vipers up for
a short Josh Christensen touchdown run.
As the game was winding down, Manning found Nebeker
for the third time up the sidelines accounting for the final scoring.
The Bulldawg
defense was lead by Rick May (5 tackles) and Fernando Vale (4 tackles,
interception. Vale returned to the team
after a two-year absence to make an impact.
Vale set up the first Bulldawg score when he
returned a Viper “quick kick” from Smothers 27 yards to the Viper 20-yard line
early in the second quarter.
The Vipers got a solid effort from their offensive line, preventing any quarterback sacks on Smothers. The Viper defense had solid performances turned in by Nick Coats (6 tackles), Kevin Slater (4 tackles, sack) and Nash Montoya (3 tackles, interception) in holding the Bulldawg offense to 24 points.
