UTAH BLITZ  26  SNAKE RIVER 6

Utah Blitz at Snake River Sabercats, April 23, 2005

NEW PLYMOUTHLevi Vagana rushed 18 times for 143 yards and a touchdown and Danny Gagnier rushed 16 times for 130 yards and a score as the Utah Blitz compiled a 2005 league high 342 total rushing yards against the lowest ranked rushing defense, the Snake River Sabercats, en route to a 26-6 victory in New Plymouth, Idaho.

Utah Blitz special teams and defense also had a great afternoon, contributing a couple of scores, including the first score of the game, a punt return in which Hugo Anderson broke a 65-yard return, but before he could get hauled down on the Snake River 5-yard line, lateralled to teammate, Dannon Handcuff who took it the rest of the way to give the Blitz the early 6-0 advantage.  Gagnier got the Blitz’ next score later in the quarter before the Sabercats  pulled to within a touchdown on a big 67-yard Matt Saylors (15-31-2-187-1) to Bill Dees touchdown completion.

Mike Tooa scooped up a Sabercat snap that had sailed over Saylors’ head in the second quarter and scooted the remaining 3 yards for the Blitz’ third touchdown and a 19-6 halftime advantage.  Vagana picked up the clinching score in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.

Offensively for the Sabercats, Tyler Collingwood had another exceptional day, picking up 190 total all-purpose yards (41 rushing, 87 receiving, 52 return yards) to pace the Sabercat attack.

For the Blitz, however, it was all about the running game with Dennis Glasker and Barrett Wilson also chipping into the attack to account for another 69 yards of the impressive Blitz total.

Defensively, the Blitz were lead by Phil Fil who lead the team in tackles with 6, John Farrington with 4 tackles, including a big 20-yard sack and Handcuff who added 4 tackles and an interception to his touchdown on the punt return from Hugo Anderson.

The Sabercats defense had a lot of tackles to make as the Blitz used a ball-control attack to move the ball up and down the field. Don Needs lead the team with 9 tackles and Tim Smith shot in with 8-1/2 of his own as the Sabercat defense struggled to shutdown the Blitz ground control offense.
