April 17, 2004 Utah Wolverines vs. Davis Vipers
UTAH WOLVERINES 52 DAVIS 6
OGDEN - An RMFL record 18 fumbles, 9 of them lost and 3 interecepted passes for a total of a record 12 turnovers marked perhaps the ugliest game of the day, however, highly successful for the first year Utah Wolverines as they capitilized on the 8 Davis Viper turnovers en route to a 52-6 victory.
The vaunted Wolverine defense forced 9 Viper fumbles, recovering 7 of them and returning 3 of the recovered fumbles for scores, all in the second quarter to extend a 12-0 first quarter lead to a 32-0 route on a cold, wet day at Ben Lomond High School. The Wolverine defense was lead by Dave Barrett (5-1/2 tackles, 1 sack), Josh Beck (4-1/2 tackles, 1 sack, 2 fumble recoveries, 1 touchdown), Matt Shoda (3-1/2 tackles, 1 sack, 1 fumble recovery, 1 touchdown) and Jeremy Smith (fumble recovery, touchdown). The Vipers could only account for 19 total net yards on the day. The Wolverine defense was haunted by penalties all day, as the Wolverines as a team, was flagged for a total of 115 yards on 15 penalties. Wolverine penalties contributed heavily to the lone Viper scoring drive in the third quarter, capped by a 13-yard pass from Shane Bitton (3-8-1-19-1) to Colby Cook.
The Woverine offense was headlined by quarterback Daniel Beck who connected with back-up quarterback, receiver, Dean Fountaine for two big scoring tosses in the first quarter. Beck also rushed for a touchdown in the third quarter as the Wolverines were able to cruise to victory after the 3 consectutive defensive scores in the second quarter.
The Vipers did pick up some sterling defensive effort from the Christensen brothers, Mike (4-1/2 tackles, 1 sack) and Mike (3-1/2 tackles, 1 interception) and Andy Schindler (3-1/2 tackles, 1 interception). Besides forcing 9 fumbles and intercepting the Wolverines twice, the Viper defense held the Wolverines to under 200 yards of total offense on the day.
