SOUTH OGDEN 33 POCATELLO 13

MARSH VALLEY - The South Ogden Rhino-Raiders gambled on 4th down on 7 of 8 opportunities converting two key fourth down and goal situtations into key touchdowns vaulting them past the Pocatello Predators 33-13 in a classic RMFL match-up on opening day.

With 12 second remaining in the first half and the score knotted at 7-7, Rhino-Raider quarterback, Dave Stireman found his favorite receiver, Norvel Young in the corner of the end zone on 4th down and 8 to give the Rhinos a big 13-7 half time advantage. Then, after a hard-fought scoreless third quarter, the Rhinos had another 4th and goal situation with 1:20 remaining in the third period. This time, Stireman found Ryan Scadden on a quick pick cross to the right for a 6-yard touchdown toss putting South Ogden up by a commanding 21-7 lead going into the fourth period.

Stireman (15-28-1-226-2) connected with Norvel Young 9 times for 169 yards, but the biggest completion might have been the one at the end of the first half to take the lead for good. The Rhino-Raiders recieved great team defensive play getting exceptional pressure from the defensive front seven lead by Vaea Fiefia (5.5 tackles), Levine Tupe (4.5 tackles, Reggie Jones (2.5 tackles), Mike Pierce (3.5 tackles) and Bill Nebekker (3.5 tackles, 1 sack).

The Predators played outstanding for most of the game and were a few 4th down stops short of pulling off the upset. Travis Boden rushed for 79 yards on 18 carries and Brock Gunter and Travis Goodwin collected touchdown passes from Jeff Belnap for the Predator offense. The defense received outstanding play from T.J. Binham (6.5 tackles), Troy and Trent Sutton, Matt Culbertson and Johnny Fisher (7 tackles), who had the unfortunate assignment of having to cover Norvel Young most of the game.
