IDAHO FALLS 9 POCATELLO 3

IDAHO FALLS - Brad Cook hustled downfield on a punt coverage play late in the 4th quarter and it paid off.

Na'jai Rankin, the veratile Pocatello Predator defensive back/wide receiver muffed a Koby Spencer punt inside his own 5-yard line and Cook was there. Cook snaked in under Rankin and another Predator to find the ball, setting up a short Cody Jackson 1-yard touchdown run, powering in over Doug Brasier on 4th down to break a 3-3 stalemate that had perpetuated since midway through the second quarter, and propel the Idaho Falls Mustangs past the Pocatello Predators 9-3, giving the Mustangs key play-off seeding edge going into the last two games of the regular season.

Both offenses struggled, however, it was perhaps the Mustang offense that struggled the most, with a paultry net of 102 total yards to Pocatello's 157 on the day it became a day when it was going to be one play, one guy that was going to be the difference. Cook was more than happy to be that guy... making that play.

Defenses dominated, perhaps non more than the Mustangs' Ron Childs who was everywhere for the Mustangs picking up 9 tackles on the day. Not far behind was Mustang tackle leader on the season, Rayce Bird. Mike Jensen also played a major role, recording not only 4-1/2 tackles, but 2 big sacks on Predator quarterback, Jeff Belnap.

The Predator defense was even stronger in a losing effort. T.J. Bingham lead the way with 5-1/2 tackles, followed closely by Johnny Fisher with 5 total tackles. Matt Culbertson (who was honored before the game for his 1997 MVP award and founding the RMFL) and Kade Shawver (in his first action for the Predators after a great career with the Snake River Rebels) also chipped in big with 3-1/2 tackles a piece.
