May 1, 2004 Idaho Falls Mustangs vs. South Ogden Rhino-Raiders
SOUTH OGDEN 28 IDAHO FALLS 0
OGDEN - For the first time in a long and glorious South Ogden Rhino-Raider history, the 4-time defending old Utah Football League champions did not score a single point until the final minutes of the third quarter, when Rhino-Raider quarterback, Dave Stireman, found star wideout, Norvel Young for a 16-yard pass into the back corner of the end zone. After that, it was the Rhino's of old again, against a gamey 3-time defending RMFL champion, Idaho Falls Mustangs as the Rhino-Raiders pulled away for a 28-0 victory.
It was certainly a "tale of two halves" as the defenses ruled in the first half. In fact, the line for Rhino quarterback, Stireman in the first half "3-15-2-50-0", including one sack and one almost sack where he was able to scramble back to the line of scrimmage. In the second half, however, Stireman's line "7-12-0-203-2" and no sacks. The other touchdown pass was another hook-up with Young, this time an electrifying 83-yard run and catch by Young that came with 7:17 remaining in the game to put the game out of reach at 21-0. Young ended up with 119 yards on 3 catches on the day and the two touchdowns to co-star with Stireman. Also big in the Rhino-Raider offense were longtime Rhino-Raider, Rob Morse, who rushed for 48 yards on 9 carries and Otter Tupe who rushed for 45 yards on 5 carries including the capping score a 38-yard touchdown rumble with less than two minutes remaining in the game.
The Mustang offense had some sporatic success under a relentless Rhino pass rush which got to Mustang quarterback, Cody Jackson (11-25-3-77-0) 7 times for total of 53 yards on losses. 24 yards in sack losses, however, came from a shotgun snap from center Tyson Poulson over Jackson's head in which Jackson was just able to recover to save the possession. The biggest offensive stars for the Mustangs were Russell Cummins who caught 6 passes, almost broke a hard-running kickoff return for a score and had a nice 9-yard run before getting injured and leaving the game in the 4th quarter. Scott Brown, the Mustangs biggest play-maker on the day, rushed for 64 yards on 12 carries and catching 2 passes for another 43 for 107 total yards. The Mustangs, as a team, only picked up 116 total net yards (includes losses in sack yardage).
Defensively for the Rhino-Raiders, contributing heavily to the shutdown defensive effort for the Rhino-Raiders, defensive tackle, Vaea Fiefia came up big with 6 tackles, including 4 quarterback sacks. Jay Tupe had 4-1/2 tackles and a sack and Jed Davies intercepted two Cody Jackson passes.
