IDAHO FALLS 6 GREAT FALLS 0
GREAT FALLS - Jason Lawson intercepted a Dee Jones pass midway through the third quarter deep in Gladiator territory setting up a game-winning Sean Powell touchdown run, breaking a 0-0 tie and vaulting the defending champion Idaho Falls Mustangs past the upstart Great Falls Gladiators 6-0 in opening day RMFL action.
Although a defensive struggle, the Mustangs did manage a commanding 255 to 55 advantage in total net yards as the Gladiator offense struggled against a swarming Mustang defense all evening. The closest, however, the Mustangs came to scoring prior to Sean Powell's 4-yard touchdown run with 5:13 on the third quarter clock was a second quarter, Rico Chacon field goal attempt which was wide.
Powell, a former 2-time RMFL offensive MVP had a solid offensive performance rushing for 47 yards as well as catching 6 passes for another 48 yards. Scott Brown performed well at quarterback, completing 17 passes on only 27 attempts for 127 yards and no interceptions. Brown also rushed for another 24 yards on 9 carries.
For the stout Gladiator defense, Reggie Jennings recorded 8 tackles, Sam Morgan 7 tackles, including a sack and Brad Thurber and Mike Pease 6 a piece in leading a spirited Gladiator defense against the 3-time RMFL Champion Mustangs. The Mustang defense was solid all around in stifling the Gladiator offense, forcing 8 punts (one partially blocked by Rayce Bird), with Lawson making the big play setting up the winning score.
