MADISON 64 GREAT FALLS 6

REXBURG - After a slow start and a 7-0 first quarter lead, the Madison Lionz exploded for 29 second quarter points behind a balanced attack of Troy Dougherty passing and a great 3-pronged rushing attack to coast by the Great Falls Gladiators 64-6.

Dougherty (13-27-2-220-4), got the second quarter explosion started with a big 65-yard catch and run connection with Kirk Smith to put the Lionz up 13-0 with 13:47 remaining in the first half. Smith had a big day with 3 touchdowns, scoring a touchdown each time he touched the football. Buck Mouser had another big day catching 4 passes for 109 yards and two touchdowns including a 45-yard bomb on the last play of the game as back-up quarterback, Todd Barber decided to throw a pass as time expired. The Madison rushing game was also on for the first time this season, behind Troy Jewkes (8 carries, 43 yards, touchdown), Tony Jenks (6 carries, 42 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Kurt Schwab (8 carries, 68 yards, touchdown) was all the Gladiator defense could handle in the game.

The Gladiators, who amassed 157 yards of net offense, had one of their most prolific offensive peformances of the year against the lower ranked Lionz defense. The Gladiators were sparked heavily by team captain, Brad Thurber. Thurber had the rare distinction of leading the team in receiving yards (47), tackles (6-1/2) and made a big heads-up play on a punt by Dee Jones that hung up in the wind and came down behind the line of scrimmage, to Thurber. Thurber, who at first expected to hear a whistle after "downing" the punt, didn't and decided to take off... 37 yards and a Gladiator first down later, a rare play was made.

The Lionz defense bent some, but overall stuffed the Gladiators behind a team record 8 quarterback sacks. Adam Huml, back for his first game of the season, had 4 of the sacks, including 2 sacks in the Gladiators end zone for safeties. Huml also lead the team with 8-1/2 tackles. Hyrum Allen also had a big game for the Lionz with 6-1/2 tackles (and one sack) to lead the team.

Besides Thurber, the Gladiators got a nice offensive performance from quarterback, Dee Jones who rushed for a team high 47 yards, passed for 90 and scored the only Gladiator touchdown on a 16-yard scramble run midway through the second quarter.
