July 10th, 2004 Idaho Falls Mustangs vs. South Ogden Rhino-Raiders
SOUTH OGDEN 46 IDAHO FALLS 20
OGDEN - The South Ogden Rhino-Raiders captured the 2004 Rocky Mountain Football League championship in style, riding a 27-point 2nd quarter outburst to a convincing 46-20 victory over the 3-time defending RMFL champion, Idaho Falls Mustangs.
It was a game where penalties and turnovers evened out (1 turnover a piece, 10 penalties a piece) and it came down to execution and grit as the Rhino-Raiders recovered from a tight first quarter that ended in a 0-0 tie, to explode in the second quarter to help bury the silver and black.
The Mustangs actually had the first opportunity to draw first blood. They stopped the initial Rhino-Raider drive when Rayce Bird stopped Beau Etling short on a 4th and short conversion and then Cody Jackson and the Mustang offense took over.
The Mustang offense had been stymied in the first meeting of the season between the two teams as the Mustangs managed only 117 total net yards of offense and no points. This time, however, the Mustangs made the right adjustments. Cody Jackson, who passed for an RMFL playoff record 43 passes in the game (20-43-1-231-1), attempted to offset the hard Rhino-Raider pass rush by opening the game in a shotgun formation and passing, passing and passing. The first Mustang drive took the team to the South Ogden 5-yard line only to stall and then have a Koby Spencer field goal get poorly executed and fall short. It would end up being the Mustangs greatest scoring opportunity of the first half.
Later in the first quarter, Rhino-Raider quarterback, Dave Stireman, got hot. Stireman, who was named the Championship game MVP at the conclusion of the contest, completed 17 of 26 passes for an amazing 321 yards, 5 touchdowns and no interceptions, an in-game quarterback rating of 172.1! Stireman completed 3 touchdown passes in the first half of the second quarter to three different receivers, Rashad Kennedy (17 yards), Norvel Young (24 yards) and Damon Greenberry (50 yards).

Greenberry and Young would headline the receiving corp once again as Greenberry went on to catch 6 passes for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns and Young caught 5 passes for 114 yards and the one touchdown. Greenberry's efforts were so exceptional, that he prevented a unanimous MVP vote for Stireman as one Managing Board panelist voted for Greenberry for game MVP.
The Mustangs would rally, however. After the Rhino-Raiders turned what would have been a 20-0 halftime edge into a 27-0 halftime romp when Levine Tupe recovered a shotgun snap from Tyson Poulsen to Cody Jackson that cleared Jacksons reach and rolled into the end zone for a touchdown and a 27-0 halftime lead, the Rhino-Raiders picked up two more scores in the third period as Stireman found Greenberry again and Beau Etling (10 rushes, 54 yards) reeled off a 12-yard touchdown sprint, the Rhino-Raiders rolled into the 4th quarter with a 40-0 lead.
Cody Jackson would cap the Mustangs first scoring drive with a 2-yard quarterback sneak over all-star right guard, Doug Brasier and then, after the Rhino-Raiders next possession stalled, Mustang veteran, Sean Powell was the first to get to the Rhino-Raider punt, blocked off the foot of Rodney Frokmer and into the end zone for the Mustangs second score and a slightly more respectable 40-14 difference.
The Mustangs' offensive tactic of using shotgun formation was effective in neutralizing the Rhino-Raider rushing attack most of the time, however, the Rhino-Raiders did pick up 5 sacks on the game, most of them on Cody Jackson scrambles. Reggie Jones and Jake Phippen each recorded two sacks each and 2004 RMFL sack champion and record holder, Vaea Fiefia picked up the team's 5th on a more traditional sack. Strong safety, Nate Miconi came up big with a number of pad-popping hits and Jed Davies lead the team in tackles with 5 as the Rhino-Raider defense played another strong game.

The win sets the Rhino-Raiders up with 12 straight victories on the season (counting non-league game, and, although their first RMFL championship, their 5th straight league championship (4 straight, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 in the Utah Football League). More game await the Rhino-Raiders as they will now take on the New Mexico Football League Champion, the Albuquerque Razorbacks on August 28th at Ogden High School. The game would be part of a semi-final match-up in the Far West Football Association tournament that will determine the best team in the western United states. South Ogden will also play an exhibition with Dixie College on September 4th and enter the North American Football League playoffs in late September.
