UTAH WOLVERINES 21 UTAH BLITZ 0

MURRAY - Dustin McCammon intercepted a Reggie McLucas pass late in the second quarter setting up the first score of the game, a 1-yard Dan Beck to Dean Fountaine touchdown toss with time running out in the first half to put the Utah Wolverines up 7-0 for the first lead of the game. With that scant 7-0 lead carrying into the 4th quarter, Fountaine returned a punt 82-yards for the game clinching score, vaulting the Utah Wolverines over the Utah Blitz 21-0 in a hard-fought defensive struggle throughout.

Both teams had limited offensive success throughout with the Blitz being stopped on a couple of goal line stands from the Wolverines, while the Wolverines missed two field goals in attempts to put up hard-earned points on the board. Although the Blitz accounted for the total yard edge (210 to 139), it was the Wolverines that capitalized on the big late second quarter turnover and turned the special teams gem to make the difference.

Although Wolverine quarterback, Dan Beck (6-23-0-78-1), struggled at times against a solid Blitz defense, he was able to convert the early touchdown as well as capping the scoring with a 1-yard plunge as time was expiring in the 4th quarter. The Wolverine defense was paced by big efforts from Jeremy Smith (6 tackles), Roger Schulze (5 tackles) and Dave Barrett (4-1/2 tackles, 2-1/2 sacks).

The Blitz defense did have an outstanding game in the loss, holding the Wolverines to a meager 139 yards of total yards, including 6 sacks of Beck. A great team defense game was played by the Blitz, however, most notebly, Nat Mackay (4-1/2 tackles, 1-1/2 sacks), Mac Norlie (4-1/2 tackles, 1/2 sack), John Farrington (4-1/2 tackles, 1-1/2 sacks) and Dustin Reid (4-1/2 tackles, 1-1/2 sacks) gave the Wolverine offense the biggest fits in a losing effort.
