SOUTH ALL-STARS 29 NORTH ALL-STARS 17

FORT HALL - The "stars" came out at midday for the South All-Stars... when it counted. As Salt Lake's Billy Davis rushed for 93 yards, Pocatello's brock Gunter caught two touchdown passes, Boise's Zac Jockumsen recorded 9 tackles and Mini-Cassia's Mike Manning threw for over 200 yards, 3 touchdown passes and rushed for one more as the South All-Stars recovered from being down 11-8 at the half, 14-8 after three quarters and down 17-15 midway through the 4th quarter to beat the North 29-17 in the last official RMFL game of the season.

After minimum scoring in a defensive battle, the 4th-of-July fireworks went off early, in the 4th quarter. In quarters 1 through 3, only 22 points were scored in the game. In the elecrifying 4th, 24 points were scored, 21 by the South in their big comeback.

Gunter, who won the offensive MVP for the third consecutive year at halftime, got the scoring off for the South in the game, catching a Mike Manning pass, puttin the South up initailly 8-0. The South dominated the stat sheet in the game, but particularly the first half. As they were driving into North territory midway through the second quarter, a bad snap to Pocatello's Jeff Belnap (who was in shotgun formation), lay on the turf. Belnap tried to scoop it up and missed just before a host of North players descended. Idaho Falls' ex league MVP, Mike Jensen (4-1/2 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 fumble recoveries) scooped up the loose ball and outraced everyone for a 58-yard fumble return and got the North to within an 8-8 tie.

As the half was winding down, the North finally mustered their best drive. After the drive was halted at the 12-yard line of the South, Helena's Bryan Hilborn connected on the first of an all-star record 3 field goals. In fact, if it wasn't for the 4th quarter heroics of Davis, Manning and Gunter, Hilborn might have been the story of the game. Hilborn also hit field goals of 47 and 37 yards.

The 4th quarter began with the North holding a 14-8 lead and the game in serious jeopardy for the South. After Gunter caught his second touchdown pass, the South lead 15-14. The North drove down the field again and Hilborn gave his team another lead at 17-15. Then, Mike Manning hit teammate and 2001 league MVP, Lonnie Edwards on an out-an-up play along the left sideline in stride and Edwards outraced Madison's Tagg Williams (6-1/2 tackles, interception) and Helena's Ken Sanford (3 tackles) for a 57-yard touchdown to put the South ahead for good.

Besides Jensen, the North got stellar defensive work from a trio of Titans. Mike Moe recorded 7 tackles, Spencer Steiner 6-1/2 and Justin Lamb had 4-1/2 tackles and a sack to lead the North defensive effort which gave up more than 400 total yards to the South offense.

For the South, besides Jockumsen, Pocatello's Troy Sutton had a big game. Sutton, who was needed to play primarily tailback for the Silverbacks, got to play most of the game on defense and had a great game. Sutton recorded 6-1/2 tackles and an interception for the South. Fellow defensemate, Dane Knickrehm also had a remarkable performance. Knickrehm intercepted a Manning pass and recorded 3-1/2 tackles, but was a bigger factor in making some great coverage plays on South receivers.

Offensive stars for the North included Idaho Falls quarterback, Cody Jackson, who went the distance for the North. Jackson attempted 39 passes and completed only 11, however he passed for 176 yards (92 yards to Madison's Brett Petty and 68 to Madison's Buck Mouser) and rushed for another 30 yards. The North, however, did not score an offensive touchdown in the game. Jensen's fumble return and Hilborn accounted for the scoring in the game for the North.
